A day at Alcatraz & Pier 39 in San Francisco

We took a ferry over to Alcatraz Island.  The water was very choppy that day and as we traveled over to the island we were tossed a bit back and forth while walking around the ship.  Tracy had a lot less trouble with this than I did.

Alcatraz as we approached it on the ferry.

This is the right side of the island where the dock is.  A few of the buildings have fallen down and a couple of them are kept up with braces and only have the outer walls left to them.

At the back of the island, just outside the exercise yard, there is a steep staircase that takes you down several stories into the garden area thats has lots of beautiful plants and flowers.

A view of San Francisco from the back of the island.

Alcatraz Light House.
A view of the Golden Gate Bridge.

This is one of the cells that was used by the only three convicts to ever escape the island.  In the back you can see where they actually escaped.

Yes, you too can purchase your own very piece of Alcatraz island.

We thought it was funny that they stamped the rules and regulations to mugs, postcards, and refrigerator magnets.  Tracy told me to remember this one.  I don't get it...

Cool Pirate ship in the bay.  They had a couple of these at the docks as well.

This gift shop and the other shops were at Pier 39 which is an outdoor mall/tourist attraction.  They had lots of different shops, restaurants, and activities.

At the back of one of the restaurants they had a sea lion dock area.  We watched them for about fifteen minutes basking in the sun, sleeping, and playing.

Of course the best part of these shops were the candy stores.  The top one had every candy you've ever heard of and the second one was called "Heavenly Chocolate" and as you can probably tell they had tons of chocolate!
This is for all of our "lefty" friends and family- finally some place to get mugs, pens, and oven mitts that are for the left-handed part of the world. :)

The chocolate store also had different flavors of fudge including this flavor that I never knew existed.

This was a good little fish place where we picked up some food for the way home.  We had a great day and lots of new experiences.  We would definitely suggest if you are ever in town to at least head down to the piers to enjoy a day of fun and checkout the great views.
